Welcome to Gilbert Counselors! I am Doe Daughtrey, a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW-6019T) working under the direct supervision of Terri Roman, LPC.
I have an undergraduate degree in Education from the University of Houston (1978), and a masters (2002) and Ph.D. (2012) in Religious Studies from Arizona State University, where I have taught religious studies classes for 15 years. I also have a Master of Social Work (2018) from ASU. My education and experience has led me to a special interest in the connections between religion and trauma. This focus allows me to provide an expanded level of support to clients experiencing difficulties in relation to their religious identity (e.g. conflicts over gender, power and authority relations, etc.).
I have training as a clinical trauma specialist (individual) as well as ongoing training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Superhero Therapy for teens and young adults, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)—all of which help clients move toward a life they feel is worth living.
I help people meet their goals by examining the connections between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors as well as by identifying what matters most to them (their values).
Even though our culture has developed the attitude that something called "happiness" should be our default state, life is very often hard. We all face difficult transitions, experience frightening situations, and often feel at the mercy of forces beyond our control. We easily can have trouble dealing with change and emotions like shame, guilt, anxiety, fear, anger, and grief. Clients grow and change by learning and practicing mindfulness, cognitive restructuring, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and personal effectiveness skills to help them deal with difficult situations they are facing.
In my personal life, I am married, have five adult children, eight fabulous grandchildren, and three cats. I love traveling (especially for music), sailing, films, video gaming, and the great outdoors; and I am persistently hungry for new knowledge and understanding of the world and how it works.
